Problem Gambling is a community and public health matter. So is Recovery! If you don’t think problem gambling impacts you…think again. Statistics show that 6% of Nevadans are, or will become, problem gamblers. Statistics also show that for every ONE compulsive gambler, another TEN individuals are impacted – their spouse, children, parents, employer and friends. Behind the “statistics” are people:) That’s why the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling is hosting this event focusing on “the very human side of problem gambling.”
I like that the Council is focusing on the “Celebration” of Problem Gambling Awareness month! The focus is on the solution and supporting a healthy lifestyle. We will hear from folks in recovery, peers and professionals, who will share how and why they became engaged in promoting awareness. These same folks will share actives that encourage healthy living, joy and recovery. (I’ll be doing a line-dancing demo so THAT should be fun. LOL. I’m definitely a beginner!)
Whether you’re an advocate, a person in recovery, a policy maker or an engaged community member, please join me and Lanie’s Hope as we support the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling for Problem Gambling Awareness: A Community Engaged.

Nevada State Conference On Problem Gambling 2016
Lanie’s Hope is honored to co-present the session “In their own words.” Using actual journal entries from compulsive gamblers in recovery, we will explore the impact of journaling as a tool for addiction recovery and mental health. Many in recovery lean on journaling as a tool to process thoughts and feelings. The act of journaling helps those in recovery “pause” and get in touch with their feeling rather than acting out the urge to gamble. Promoted by many clinicans as an effective therapeutic tool, this presentation offers a rare glimpse into the recovering gambler’s most private thoughts and the personal journey of journaling as a path to self awareness.

Will you “Answer the Call”?
The Nevada Council on Problem Gambling has been doing more with less for several years. Recent budget cuts have impacted the Council’s ability to serve our community, and yet through the remarkable work of a small, focused and impassioned staff, this community service organization continues to provide exceptional resources on problem gambling, supports those impacted by problem gambling, and NEVER let’s the phone go unanswered! They need the support of our community! It is unfathomable to me that, as of this writing, only two individuals have contributed to this drive to keep the phone lines going. I can only guess that this is because the generous Las Vegas community does not know the need exists. Please consider a contribution to keep the phone line (a life line to many) alive!
